A Toronto police officer was killed during a law enforcement operation connected to the investigation of a shooting at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto, authorities confirmed on Thursday. The incident has shocked the city and prompted a large-scale search for an additional suspect.

The fallen officer was identified as Marc Pinizotto, a 43-year-old veteran of the Toronto Police Service who had served for 18 years. Officials said he was shot while officers were executing search warrants as part of an ongoing investigation into several shootings, including the March 2026 attack on the U.S. Consulate in downtown Toronto. He later died from his injuries in a hospital.

According to Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw, officers were conducting a raid linked to the national security investigation when gunfire erupted. One suspect was taken into custody and transported to a hospital, while authorities launched a manhunt for a second suspect identified as Zara Jabbi, 19, who was described as armed and dangerous. Police urged the suspect to surrender immediately.

The investigation stems from a March 2026 shooting in which two individuals allegedly fired multiple rounds at the U.S. Consulate building in Toronto before fleeing in a stolen vehicle. While the attack caused property damage, no injuries were reported. Canadian authorities classified the incident as a national security matter and increased security around U.S. and Israeli diplomatic facilities afterward.

Authorities have not yet released additional details about the circumstances surrounding Thursdayโ€™s fatal shooting or the specific role of the suspects in the broader investigation. Investigators continue to examine evidence gathered during the operation and are working to determine whether additional arrests may follow.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow expressed condolences to the officerโ€™s family, friends, and colleagues, describing the loss as a tragedy for the entire city. Tributes have also poured in from members of law enforcement and community leaders who praised Pinizottoโ€™s years of service and dedication to public safety.

The fatal shooting highlights the dangers faced by police officers during high-risk investigations, particularly those involving national security concerns. As authorities continue their search for the remaining suspect, residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any relevant information to law enforcement.

The investigation remains active, and officials say additional information will be released as it becomes available. For now, the focus remains on bringing all suspects into custody and honoring the memory of the officer who lost his life in the line of duty.
